You’ve been to a few club sprint days and start thinking you really need something other than your street tyres for events.
The tyres you need are R compound race tyres, these are treaded race tyres that are legal for road use. R-compound tyres are designed to deliver increased grip, and improve acceleration, cornering and braking. There are R-compound versions available from most manufacturers, Bridgestone, Michelin, Dunlop etc. However your choices may be limited, as not all road sizes are available in R-compound. CAMS provide a full list in Schedule E – Wheels and Tyres / Production Car Tyre List
You will also need a spare set of wheels for your new race tyres, these don’t need to be light weight race wheels (but they could be) a second hand set of standard rims will be fine.
Preparing for an event, you may have stored your spare wheels with your mechanic and call in the day before and swap to your race wheels, or you might decide to buy yourself a jack and change your own wheels. If you do it yourself you’ll also need a tension wrench to tighten things without damaging your alloy wheel nuts.
If you are ready for a set of race wheels we would be happy to give you some pointers next time you call in. We also have some second hand tyres and wheels that may suit your needs.
