It’s not uncommon to have an after-hours or weekend call from someone whose engine oil light has come on, and who’s unsure what oil to top up with.
For 911, 964 and 993 Models (1997 and earlier) Stuart advocates a fully synthetic 10W-60. We use a Liqui Moly product that is available to purchase from most Autobarn stores in both a 1 Litre and 5 Litre pack. This link takes you to the Liqui Moly website, and gives some additional product information.
Stuart’s Top Tip: For 911 air cooled engines, 1997 and earlier, you can check your oil level whilst waiting at the traffic lights. The car just needs to be warmed up, idling and on flat ground to get an accurate dash board reading. If the oil level is less than half full it really should have a top up. To top up the oil you’ll need to be on flat ground with the engine running, and have someone watching the gauge as you slowly poor the oil in. (A white uniform and roller skates are not compulsory!!!)
For Porsche 911’s after 1998, that is the 996 model and later, we use a Liqui Moly Fully Synthetic 5W- 40. This oil is also available in smaller consumer friendly pack if you’d like to keep some on hand. Additional product information can also be found via this website link.
As far as other more modern Porsche offers such as the Boxster, Cayman, Panamera, Cayenne and Macan, Stuart recommends Fully Synthetic 5W- 40.
